Round nine, Castle Park, KO 2.30 pm
The Blues are third and the Knights are fifth, three points below Bedford, so league position will be altered for the winner and loser, which isn’t always the case. The Blues have scored 258 points (32/game) and conceded 216 points (27/game). The Knights have scored 216 points (27/game) and conceded 184 points (23/game). The Blues have scored the third highest number of points compared to the Knights being sixth.
Fairly obviously Bristol then Ealing Trailfinders have scored the most points but the Cornish Pirates have scored five more points than Bedford. The Pirates points scored pushes the Knights’ points scored to sixth-place
Bedford’s points conceded is seventh best in the Championship with the Knights’ points conceded being fifth best. First and second-placed Bristol and Eealing Trailfinders have the strongest defence. These are followed by tenth-placed Jersey and eighth-placed Hartpury College.
Only Bristol and Ealing Trailfinders have conceded fewer points than the Knights and Bedford have conceded the sixth lowest number of points in the Championship.
Bedford have scored 36 tries (third), eight more than Doncaster but the Blues have conceded 30 tries, nine more than the Knights. Blues Wingers lead the way and have scored 14 tries this season. In a similar fashion more tries have been scored by Forwards against Bedford than any other team and these have predominantly been by the Front Row. Harry Sheppard (Fly Half) keeps the scoreboard ticking over whilst Dean Adamson (Wing) scores the tries, (10 in eight games, leading try-scorer). Jordan Burns (Scrum Half) is also an accomplished try-scorer and is the Championship’s equal fifth top try-scorer. Chris Czekka (Wing/Full Back) has only scored one fewer than Burns and Howard Packman (Wing) one fewer than Czekka.
Bedford tries have been scored predominantly by the Backs (30, 83%), in fact the Blues’ Backs lead the Championship try-scoring amongst Backs. Their Forwards have scored five tries.
The Knights lost Jarad Williams to Bedford Blues but Tom James and Jason Hill came in the other direction (Wikipedia 26/06/17):
Other results that could affect the Knights’ fifth-placed league position are:
Friday 17th November
Carnegie (6th, 2 points below) ‘welcome’ league leaders Bristol to Emerald Headingly Stadium
Cornish Pirates (7th, 3 points below) travel to Richmond Athletic Ground to play London Scottish
Saturday 18th November
Could be Rotherham Titans greatest opportunity for a win so far this season as they welcome tenth-placed Jersey Reds to Clifton Lane. Next week is eleventh-placed London Scottish again at Clifton Lane.
Hartpury College (8th, 4 points below) host Richmond (9th, 5 points below)
Sunday 19th November
Nottingham (4th, 1 point above) hope to beat second-placed Ealing Trailfinders at Nottingham’s Lady Bay Sports Ground
This is the first of a trio of games against the current top three in the Championship. Next week we travel down to Trailfinders Sports Ground at Vallis Way to play Ealing Trailfinders and then we welcome Bristol to Castle Park on 2nd December. This is on the back of three losses on the bounce which is the first time it’s happened in three seasons. Perhaps ex-Rugby League player Corey Paterson might make an appearance and hopefully some more injured players will return. The Knights tend to up their game against Bristol, they’ve got to do the same against Bedford and Ealing.
