The Club regret to announce the death at the age of 88 of Peter Penny (former player, committee member, bar chairman and 1st XV touch judge) at his home in Threshfield after a long illness. We offer our deepest sympathy to his wife Janet, their families and their friends.
Peter played for the club in the late 1940s before national service and employment took him south. He returned to live in the area in 1964 to take over the running of his families’ butcher’s shop on Carr House Road and their stall in the market. In 1969 Peter rekindled his interest in the club and was soon elected onto the committee as bar chairman and this coincided with the conversion of the old gymnasium into a very popular club room and the previous bar into a nice lounge. Peter had his work cut out as this conversion heralded a significant increase in the club’s playing and social activities making his job as bar chairman a very time consuming one. The conversion also attracted local and junior county school and club representative matches to the club and Peter’s roast lunches, home made pie and chips and curries were always in demand. He also found time during this period to run the line for the 1st XV including in our Yorkshire Shield winning season in 1979. In the early 1980s Peter stood down from his club activities to spend his spare time with Janet in his beloved Yorkshire Dales to which he finally moved to permanently in 1995.
Details of his funeral arrangements will be posted when known.
