Round five, Saturday 30th September - 15:00, Richmond Athletic Ground

Apologies for the lack of scoring stats but Statbunker is still not showing Sunday’s results and so has London Scottish as having played three games!

The Scottish exiles have bought in 4 ex-students among their 17 new recruits, just five players have exited the club according to Wikipedia..

The Scottish exiles first four games were against:
Carnegie at home 28-12 W
Bedford Blues away 44-26 L
Nottingham at home 31-33 L
Ealing Trailfinders away 12-72 L

The opening win against Carnegie followed by three losses leaves the Scottish exiles in tenth place in the Championship with seven points.

The Knights are riding high at the moment; they are third with 15 points. Ealing Trailfinders and Bristol are both still unbeaten until Saturday, the Knights have only lost one game as have Carnegie but they drew with Hartpury College. Nottingham, Bedford Blues Jersey and Hartpury College have all only lost two games. To illustrate the importance of bonus points; Cornish Pirates are eighth after winning one and losing three, Hartpury College are one below them even though they have won one, drawn one and lost two. The students drew a match that the Pirates lost but the Pirates have scored five bonus points to Hartpury’s three.

Other matches that could affect us are:

Friday 29 September

Nottingham (4th, 4 points below) host newcomers and ninth-placed Hartpury College who are two points behind the Green & Whites.

Saturday 30 September

Bedford Blues (5th, 4 points below) fly over to play seventh-placed Jersey Reds in a match that could have a purple result (sorry!)

Sunday 1 October

Bristol (2nd, 4 points above) welcome Ealing Trailfinders (1st, 5 points above) in a top v second encounter. Just one point separates Bristol from Ealing. Both teams are undefeated so far in this campaign; the only way that could continue would be if they drew.

Carnegie (6th, 4 points below) receives eighth-placed Cornish Pirates. The Pirates are two points behind Carnegie.

London Scottish scoring stats.

Ex-Saracen/Bedford Blues Fly Half now the LS Backs Player/Coach Jake Sharp is their leading points scorer, Sharpe is the ninth top points scorer in the Championship and just two points from being seventh (Simon Humberstone is third). Sharpe is the fourth top conversion scorer but has only scored three penalties. This might indicate that Sharpe could be higher in the list if the Scottish exiles were awarded more kickable penalties. He has converted six out of seven tries scored at home.

Ex-Bristol Centre Ben Mosses is the Scottish leading try-scorer with three tries scored, equal with our Andy Bulamakau. Ex-Cornish Pirate Back Three Craig Holland, ex-Jersey Red Winger Nicholas Scott and ex-Esher and London Irish Centre Ross Neal have each scored a brace of tries.
In total LS are the Championship’s sixth top try-scorers with 14 tries scored in four games. Of these 14 tries, nine have been scored by Backs and five scored by Forwards. Scottish Centres have scored five of those nine tries; the highest number by any Centre pairing in the Championship.
LS have conceded the second most tries in the division, only Rotherham Titans have conceded more. Fairly obviously after last week’s away thrashing by Ealing, they have conceded fourteen away tries compared to just six at home. Tries have been predominantly conceded by Wingers.
Jersey Reds have now conceded one less try than the Knights, so they have takeover our mantle of having the strongest defence - for now! So the second weakest defence of their try-line takes on the second strongest defence. The Scottish have scored two more tries than the Knights, at least until after the game.

As Griff mentioned in his interview to DKTV, London Scottish are a wounded animal after their thrashing by Ealing Trailfinders on their plastic pitch. They will be looking to bounce back hard and will be a different animal at home. It is the Knights’ job to make sure that animal stays wounded and doesn’t recover.
