The Yorkshire Post on Monday reported, “…Director of rugby Clive Griffiths made no secret of the fact during the build-up that he viewed this weekend’s league game against Moseley the more important of the two.
But that didn’t stop him putting out a strong side for their latest challenge with scrum-half Michael Heaney making a welcome return after missing the last four games and resuming his partnership with Declan Cusack for the first time for over two months...”
We beat Connacht Eagles 22 – 5 so now we can concentrate on the Championship this weekend.
The Knights are still third, yes third in the Championship with three losses from their nine games played. Moseley are tenth after winning three and losing six.
The Knights have scored 252 points (28/match) and conceded 214 points (23.8/match) on their nine-game journey. Mose have scored 209 (23.2/match) and conceded 270 (30/match) points on their trip. Hopefully it remains a coincidence that both the Knights have conceded and Mose have scored an average of 23.x points/match) as we want to score many more and concede many less.
Mose’s Glyn Hughes (Fly Half/Full Back) is the third highest points scorer in the Championship, below Dougie and Bristol’s Gavin Henson. Kyle Evans (wing) and Drew Cheshire (wing) are the Championship’s equal-sixth top try-scorers this season. The Knights, especially Dougie and Tyson must watch out for Mose’s flying wingers.
Impressive scoring stats from the Championship’s tenth-placed team, in fact Mose have scored more points than seventh-placed London Scottish. Their defence has let them down as they have leaked more points than any other team in the Championship. Mose have leaked 35 tries this season, compared to the Knights’ 24. London Scottish still have the strongest defence, having only conceded 18 tries.
Two thirds of Moseley’s tries have been scored by backs, all bar three by the wingers. Only Bedford Blues’ wingers have scored more tries in the Championship this season. The Back Row have scored 60% of the tries scored by forwards. Mose have scored the sixth highest number of tries in the Championship but, as mentioned, they have conceded the most. Their back row (highest amount conceded in the Championship) then their wings (joint-second highest conceded ) are Mose’s Achilles heel. So strong areas in attack are also weak areas in defence.
Mose have conceded three tries by the second row, only Jersey have conceded more by this position.
