The Knights return to league action with an away game at Meadow Lane against Nottingham rugby. Nottingham rugby are fifth in the Championship and the Knights are ninth. We are in the middle of three teams equal on league points, Cornish Pirates (above because they’ve scored more points) and Yorkshire (Leeds) Carnegie who are below as we’ve won one more game.
Nottingham have won five, lost three; the Knights have won three, lost five. They have scored eleven more points than us in the process (less than 1.4 per game) and Nottingham have leaked 34 points more than us (4.25 per game). The three teams to beat Nottingham have been Jersey (at Meadow Lane), Worcester Warriors and Bristol. In fact Wuss (2) and Bristol (top) are the only current top four teams that Nottingham have played.
Wuss and Bristol beat the Knights plus we also lost to third-placed London Scottish and we’re due to play fourth-placed Rotherham Titans on 4th January. However Nottingham beat the other two teams away that sit below the top four that beat the Knights at Castle Park; Cornish Pirates and Moseley. So initially previous results look positive in that we beat Jersey and have already played the top three when Nottingham have only played two of them. Then we notice that Nottingham beat the ‘lesser’ teams away that beat the Knights at ‘fortress’ Castle Park. (It made sense to me when I wrote it!)
The Knights are doing better on the road this season than at home; we have won two of three away games compared to winning one of four home games. Mind you Yorkshire (Leeds) Carnegie and Plymouth Albion haven’t won at home yet! Is our better away form a good omen travelling to Meadow Lane?
Some players are returning from injury so it’s time to return to winning ways. The game against Cross Keys showed some very encouraging form.
Nottingham’s Dan Mugford is their leading points scorer with two tries, six conversions and nine penalties. Brent Wilson is their top try-scorer, he averages a try every couple of games.
Elsewhere in the Championship that could have an impact in one game:
Equal points:
Eighth-placed Cornish Pirates nip over to nearby and yet-to-win Plymouth Albion for their local derby on Saturday 27th.
Tenth-placed Yorkshire (Leeds) Carnegie fly to the Channel Islands to play to sixth-placed Jersey the day before (Sat 20th).
Above:
Jersey (sixth, three points above) welcome Yorkshire (Leeds) Carnegie.
Bedford Blues (seventh, one point above) welcome undefeated Bristol on Friday 26th.
Below:
Eleventh-placed Moseley travel to South Yorkshire on Friday 26th to play fourth-placed Rotherham Titans.
C.mon Donny let’s keep carry-over that winning feeling from the Cup to the Championship and after the visit by Shaun Edwards let’s improve our good defensive record (fifth ‘tightest’ in the Championship).
Well obviously we can't deduct points but we can limit the number scored against us to improve our record compared to other teams!
DONNY, DONNY, DONNY…
