Round 19, Saturday 20th April, Dillingham Park, Ampthill. KO 3pm
Sixth-placed Ampthill welcome fifth-placed Doncaster Knights to Dillingham Park for a 6th v 5th clash. Both sides play the game after each had a bonus point win last weekend.
That win was the third win on the trot for the Mob, they beat Ealing Trailfinders 29-22 in what Head Coach Paul Turner called their best performance of the season. They then beat Caldy 20-29 and last time out Bedford Blues 24-29 at Goldington Road. First the Mob’s left wing Brandon Jackson scored out wide after evading the defence against the Blues. Next back row Ollie Stonham managed to burrow his way underneath Bedford’s defence to ground the ball. Then hooker Samson Adejimi broke off the back of a dominant rolling maul to crash his way over the line. The 4th and bonus point try was scored before the break when Adejimi increased his tally to 2 tries after good passing culminated in Adejimi bursting through an attempted tackle.
Jackson, Stonham and Adejimi aren’t listed in the Ampthill squad but are list as Saracens players, so I assume they are on dual registration.
The Knights comfortably beat Caldy at Castle Park, 29-7. It was retribution for the Knights who ‘had a very bad day at the office’ in The Wirral just before Christmas. Knight tries were scored by wingers Jack Metcalf and George Simpson in the first half, then centre Connor Edwards and flanker Archie Smeaton in the second half. I won’t embarrass the player that dropped the ball for no reason centrally, over the try line; it wasn’t even a knock-on fumble! These probable 7 points and a few others were left on the field but the Knights still recorded a 5-point win.
A's left wing Brandon Jackson is a player to watch for, he scored a hattrick against Caldy plus don’t forget Samson Adejimi's brace against Bedford. Who knows how many Saracens will play for the Mob, obviously all of them are great players.
Ampthill have scored the same number of points as the Knights but conceded a few more.
An A’s fly half, Gwyn Parks is the sixth highest points-scorer in the Championship after scoring a few fewer points than the Knights’ Russell Bennett. They are the 5th highest points-scorers in the Championship at home and have scored more points at home than the Knights have away.
Championship games taking place this weekend:
Saturday 20th April
Ampthill (6) v Doncaster Knights (5)
Caldy (10) v Ealing Trailfinders (1)
Coventry (2) v Bedford Blues (4)
London Scottish (9) v Nottingham (8)
Sunday 21st April
Cornish Pirates (3) v Cambridge (11)
Hartpury RFC (7) were due to fly to Jersey to play the Reds
A Knight W would see them rise to equal-4th if the Blues lose to Coventry. The Knights must win with a bonus point to overtake them into 4th. Sorry, a win would secure 4th because we'd have won 11 games to Bedford's 10 if they lose.
A Knight L would see them remain 5th because Ampthill are 6 points below.
