Round 3, Castle Park @ 2.30pm
The third match of the 2022/23 season is the Knights’ first home game.
Richmond RFC
‘Mond’ stated a significant amount of continuity in its coaching this coming season with Head Coach Rob Powell remaining in place and once again supported by Ian Kench and Nic Rouse. In addition, they welcome Barry Goulding to this group, a backs specialist from Leinster. Simon Devis and Nick Darke remain coaching the Men’s squads and will be assisted by the arrival of South African, Mike Myburgh, and the welcome return to Richmond Rugby of Steve Lawrence.
Mond started pre-season early with a 12-45 win against National League 2 East side Blackheath on 12th August. They then welcomed Ealing Trailfinders and lost 26-35.
New Signings
• Conor Maguire Prop from Gloucester)
• George Cave Prop from Bath Uni
• Alex Post Hooker from Hong Kong and OURFC
• Ayanfe Oladukan Lock from Bristol Uni
• Bailey Marshall-Telfer Flanker from Cardiff Met
• Stephen Kerins Scrum Half from Ealing Trailfinders
• Bill Johnston Fly Half from Ealing
• Paddy Case Centre from Leeds Tykes
• Harry Hunter Centre from Ealing Academy
• Raz Patel Centre from Bath Uni
• Alex O’Meara Back Three from Cornish Pirates
• Tom Mills Back Three from Saracens Academy
• Tom Caesar Back Three from Ulster Academy.
Unsurprisingly for those that know of Mark Bright’s reputation, Richmond have announced that he will be Club Captain this season. Bright stepped into the captaincy role last season when Cam Mitchell was long term injured.
Last head to head performance
The last time the teams played the Knights secured the win with a try in the 82nd minute, to record a 30-33 victory.
Last time(s) out
Mond’s first Championship game was in Cornwall against the Pirates, they lost this 21-14 or three converted tries to two, with no penalties. They were drawing seven all at half time.
Next up was a home welcome to Championship newcomers Caldy, they were pipped at the post 32-34. Mond are now just one of three teams that haven’t won either of their first two games. London Scottish and Ampthill respectively are below them on bonus points scored. Mond have scored three, Scottish one and Ampthill have yet to score a point.
The Knights lost their first away game 29-10 to league Champions Ealing Trailfinders. Last time out they overcame Hartpury 16-34. This result will give the Knights great encouragement because they lost their first two away games last season plus the wins against Hartpury last season were both very close: by five points then by one point.
The Knights scored two tries in the first half v Hartpury, after giving away nine points in the first eleven minutes through indiscipline. Initially Jack Spittle scored in the corner after good passing by George Simpson and Harry Davey, who broke the defensive line. After 20 minutes Thom Smith was the finishing touch on after about 33 passes for the try. Special mention for Ben Murphy's charging run, muscling his way through the tackles for the line. Two more tries were scored in the second half to score the winning bonus point. First after 47 minutes quick recycle found the ball in Simpson's hands and there was no question if the winger had the pace in open space to run it over the line. After 50 minutes Davey danced his way through the line and around defenders again. He popped the ball up to Alex Dolly from the floor who fed Robbie Smith on the wing. He halted to avoid a defender before trotting in the score.
In conclusion there were still too many errors by the Knights, but a bonus-point win after some exceptional tries left supporters in a more confident mood.
Mond danger men
Last season’s joint top try-scorer after dotting the ball down on 17 occasions was Richmond No.8 Mark Bright.
Winger Tom Mills was awarded a penalty try against the Pirates.
Winger O'Meara scored a brace of tries plus Centre Kiernan and Full Back Kaye dotted down.
Team strengths and weaknesses
All of Mond’s tries over both games this season were scored by Backs, three by wingers, which would indicate that the ball is spread out wide.
Last time out against Caldy three of the five Caldy tries were scored by Forwards, two by the same Flanker and one by a Lock, this might indicate an opportunity.
Doncaster Knights announced the signing of Back Row Martin Sigren two days before the Hartpury game. Martin arrives from Super Liga Americana de Rugby side, Selknam Rugby, where he has excelled for the Chilean side. He is the Captain of Chile, the third highest-ranked nation in South America (21st in the World rankings).
The Championship Rugby Professional Game Board announced in September that the minimum capacity criteria for entry into the Premiership will be reduced from 10001 to 5000. The club must meet all other entry criteria regarding safety etc plus have planning permission to develop the ground up to a capacity of 10,001, with funding in place to achieve this. It would have to demonstrate an agreement with a contractor to carry out the work in due course.
The minimum capacity criteria will revert to 10001 the following season.
The rest of the Championship
Caldy v Nottingham
Cornish Pirates v Bedford Blues
Coventry v Ampthill
Ealing Trailfinders v Hartpury
