Round 3, Stade Santander International, Jersey Fri 25th Oct, 2019 - 7:45pm
After two league games, the Knights have recorded one win and one defeat after beating Hartpury College 8-20 at ALPAS Arena and then losing 25-47 to a clinical Cornish Pirates side at Castle Park.
Jersey Reds also won their first league game 22-15 against Coventry but then lost 52-38 to Ealing Trailfinders. Coincidentally we both have a point’s scored/conceded difference of -7 but the Reds scored two try bonus points in their win and loss (the Cornish Pirates are the only other team to have scored a try bonus point in each game). We have yet to score a bonus point but we had a chance to score a try bonus point against the Pirates after Tyson Lewis nearly scored our fourth try but was tackled in the 76th minute.
After only two games Ampthill and Jersey are the top try-scoring teams in the Championship with ten tries. We have scored five tries to date (equal eighth with Carnegie). The Red’s Fly half Greg Dyer is equal-third on the list of Championship top points scorers with our own Sam Olver (Pirate’s Javier Rojas is top). Sam has kicked better but Dyer has also scored two tries.
The Rugby Paper’s Championship Dream Team 2018/19 Right Wing, Leroy van Dam (14) and Scrum Half William Homer (9) are two of the few players to score a brace of tries in two games with the Red’s Dyer, Nic Dolly (Hooker), Jack MacFarlane (Hooker), Auguy Slowick (Back Three) and Kyle Hatherell (Lock/Back Row).
To state the obvious, Jersey Red’s Hookers have scored four tries between them over just two games, watch for them peeling off the set piece, rucks and mauls Knights.
The Reds have conceded seven tries over two games to the Knights’ six but both are nowhere near as bad as Carnegie’s 14! Oddly enough Ealing Trailfinders have conceded the second highest with ten tries.
Only the Reds and Newcastle Falcons have conceded just two tries to Backs so far but the Reds have conceded five to Forwards and only Carnegie have conceded more to the Forward positions. That may indicate a strong Backs defence compared to a weaker Forward defence.
The Reds’ first two league games were initially a home game against Coventry they then travelled to Ealing to play the Trailfinders. The Reds beat Cov 22-15 in a game that had a try-score of 4-0. The Reds scored a try bonus point and Cov didn’t cross the whitewash yet they scored five penalties. Red’s try-scorers were Fly Half Greg Dyer and Hooker Nick Dolly scored a brace.
A feat that the Reds are appropriately proud of is beating Russia 35-22 in Moscow just before the Russians participation in the 2019 World Cup.
