Round 1, the recently re-named Alpas Arena, Hartpury Sat 12th Oct, 2019 - 02:30pm
Following three Championship Cup matches, we kick off the Championship campaign (as we did our Cup campaign) against Hartpury College. We can expect to face a very different team to the one we played in our first game. The Knights did the double over Hartpury last season by winning both home and away games with fantastic performances. The sides didn’t play each other in the Championship Cup last season. We are hopefully in a better position than last week with player availability because some Knights should have recovered from injury but competition for starting places is obviously intense.
This is the eleventh season of the professional second tier according to Wikipedia but I believe that Richmond weren’t fully professional last season. The competition will be sponsored by Greene King in their last year of their current sponsorship deal which has sponsored the RFU Championship for six years.
“Each club will receive £530,000 in funding from the RFU in the last year of a deal with the RFU. There were plans to expand Premiership Rugby which would have reprieved Newcastle Falcons from being relegated to the Championship as well as plans to abolish promotion and relegation but these plans were blocked by the RFU following complaints from Cornish Pirates and a threat of legal action. There are also plans for the RFU Championship to have a delayed start until October due to the 2019 Rugby World Cup.”
(Wikipedia).
These plans have since been realised with our first league game being played on 12th October. Cup matches started on 21st September.
As per the Cup preview, Hartpury have signed five from BUCS (British Universities & Colleges Sport) Super Rugby squad to their professional team and other new players include former England Sevens player, Seb Nagle-Taylor from Rotherham Titans where he was Captain and Nagle-Taylor was the joint-second highest try-scorer in National One with 21 tries and voted the Titan’s Player of the Season. Ex-Bath A-Team and ex-London Irish Academy players Scrum Half Luke Carter has signed from Ealing Trailfinfinders. Ex-Saracens Academy Second Row Tom Jubb has signed from Coventry. Players to be wary of from their Championship Cup games are
As mentioned earlier the Knights beat Hartpury 28-17 at Castle Park last September and then 21-48 last January in one of our great performances but the home team won the season before.
The Knights will travel to Hartpury in a confident mood after well-fought victory over Jersey Reds. To battle it out against Jersey Reds at Castle Park and earn the victory with ten players absent through injury plus one through suspension must fill the team with confidence of their strength in depth. Some Knights should have recovered from injury but competition for starting places is obviously more intense now than uninjured players have proved their ability.
As ever the question is how many Gloucester players will play against the Knights now that the league campaign has started?
