Jamie Crawford reckoned that the Championship is not for amateur teams. Perhaps he could tell us what it really is for. For a long time now I've wondered about what its purpose actually is. The team that has been relegated from the Premiership has a relaxing season then goes back from whence they came. Virtually no other team is ever in the mix for promotion. I can't ever see there being another Exeter. What I can see is the Premiership becoming a closed shop.
I can't make my mind up on this Rog. I think England needs two fully pro leagues, otherwise what happens to all the players who would like forge a career in pro rugby? Also, I wonder how many of the home nations rugby teams have players who started out in the Championship?
That said, the RFU are relying on benefactors such as Donny's to keep the division afloat. For me, the RFU are at fault and they should be distributing the money more fairly. If you take football as an example (hard to compare I know), the Championship has grown from strength to strength over the years but that's because the TV money has been ploughed into it. This is unlikely to happen in rugby.
Realistically, and feel free to shoot me down, Donny are never going to reach the Premiership in my lifetime. But as long as the Championship remains competitive and entertaining, does that matter? I do think they need to reinstate the play off mind you.. to at least keep the dream alive.
One suggestion I had made before is that one team gets automatic promotion then the next 4 teams get to play off for £1 million to strengthen their squad for the following season. Maybe a bit risky for some but a massive incentive for others!!
