Jersey Reds preview sponsored by Porsche Centre Sheffield (www.porschesheffield.co.uk)
Round 16, Fri 1st Mar, 2019 - 07:45pm Stade Santander International, Jersey.
Jersey Reds are currently fourth after winning nine games and losing six, the Knights are eighth after winning six and losing nine games.
The Reds have scored 403 points (26.9/game) and conceded 282 points (18.8/game). The Knights have scored 394 points (26.3/game) and conceded 378 points (25.3/game). Only London Irish have conceded fewer points, the Cornish Pirates have conceded the next fewest but that is 56 more points. Points scored by us and the Reds are comparable but Jersey have exhibited an over 25% stronger defence than us with points scored against them.
Jersey will be smarting from their heaviest defeat of the season; 27-3 away at London Irish on 27th January. They conceded four tries against Irish yet they’ve only conceded 33 all season before that (ave. just over 2/game). That loss was the only time Jersey have conceded four tries, so their defence is excellent. The Reds started the season badly by losing their first three games, so half of all their losses were in the first few weeks of the season. Further bad news for the Knights is that Jersey Reds have only been beaten once at home this season. Although they beat the mighty London Irish 17-14 in Round three, they lost To London Scottish 14-24 in Round 14.
There are six teams with a positive points difference including the Knights; both Nottingham and Coventry immediately above us have a negative points difference.
The Cornish Pirates are equal with Jersey Reds on league points but they have won a game less. The Pirates have however scored 15 bonus points from 15 games, not even London Irish have achieved this however 11 are try bonus points (equal with Ealing Trailfinders) and four are losing bonus points (equal with Jersey Reds, Coventry and us).
The Knights need to make their points scored lead to wins.
Other fixtures that could impact our eighth position are:
Coventry (7th, +2) welcome Richmond (11th)
London Scottish (9th, equal) travel to Richmond oops - Reading to face top-placed London Irish
Edit (added) – Both games are on Saturday 2nd March
Overall the Knights lost away against a much more expensive team, second-placed Ealing Trailfinders but put in a performance they were proud of. They then lost at home against Nottingham in a game that all felt they should have won but let’s say a lack of urgency or purpose left the Knights with a losing bonus point. Jersey Reds have only lost once at home yet this season but we beat them 24-26 early last season and lost by just six points in December the season before, so they are definitely not unbeatable at home
