Nottingham preview sponsored by Steadfast Industrial Conveyor Belts (www.steadfast.uk.com)
Round 5, Lady Bay Sportsground, Nottingham, Friday 28th September, 2018 – 19.45
Before the start of the season, “Looking at the first five fixtures of the season, Griff is optimistic about the Knights chances of picking up a number of victories.
“It could have been worse for sure, we can’t under estimate teams like Richmond as we lost some of the games last season against those sides, we know why that happened and I’m generally happy with the first five games it just a damper to travel all the way down to Cornwall for the first match.”
“We will turn up and we will be firing no doubts about that, we are aiming to be up there against the best and we enter the Championship with full force from Cornish Pirates to the end of April and it’s an exciting challenge to face.”” (DRFC website)
Four fixtures down and we’ve picked up two victories this far, we didn’t underestimate Richmond,. Let’s make Nottingham away our third win.
Last Sunday Nottingham beat Carnegie 17-36 @ Headingley Stadium to put them fourth in the Championship after both winning and losing two of their games played. The Knights are seventh after the same win:loss ratio but Nottingham have won three bonus points (two try and one losing) to the Knights’ single losing bonus point.
Nottingham have scored 40 more points than the Knights over the first four games, I think that’s about 10 points per game more on average! They have however conceded 29 more points (7.25/game average). This is mainly due to losing 52-20 to the Irish exiles in week two.
In fact Nottingham are currently the highest scorers in the Championship with the Irish yet to play their fourth game.
I’m glad I checked, those numbers are from the RFU but Wikipedia and Teletext have Nottingham as scoring four more points and conceding 12 more than us. Two sources with the same numbers would suggest the RFU is incorrect!
Irish-born, Canadian International and Nottingham Fly Half/Centre is the second highest points-scorer in the Championship so watch out for giving away kickable penalties.
At this early stage of the season we can’t catch Cornish Pirates, Ealing Trailfinders or London Irish-(highly unlikely) in one game even though the Irish have a game in hand. Similarly Jersey Reds and Richmond-(again highly unlikely) can’t catch us if they win and we lose to Nottingham.
Other fixtures that could affect us this weekend:
Jersey Reds welcome Carnegie (6 points & 3 places below) @ Stade Santander International
Bedford Blues (2 points & 2 places above) host London Scottish (2 points & 2 places below) @ Goldington Road
Coventry (1 point & 1 place above) must play London Irish @ Butts Park Arena
Richmond welcome Hartpury College to Richmond Athletic Ground
There is also an interesting clash as second-placed Ealing Trailfinders welcome the Cornish Pirates to Trailfinders Sports Club.
There’s not much difference in performance between the teams; both have won two: lost two and there’s only a point’s difference of eleven between them. Nottingham not only have home advantage but they have already won under the lights at Lady Bay, the Knights have only played during the day so far this season.
