Sale FC preview sponsored by Steadfast Industrial Conveyor Belts (www.steadfast.uk.com)
“Sale Sharks is an English professional rugby union club from the Greater Manchester that plays in the English Premiership. Their northern rivals are the Newcastle Falcons…
Formed by a team of sportsmen drawn mainly from Sale Cricket Club, Sale Football Club was founded in 1861 (Doncaster was formed in 1875) and is the fifth oldest surviving rugby club. In the early days of the club, rules were usually deemed unnecessary and those that were enforced were often made up on the spot. As the game began to evolve, however, the need for specified regulations became apparent and in 1865 the Minute Book was created stipulating the ten rules to be followed by all players. This is reputedly world’s oldest existing rugby rule book… and a much treasured possession. Games were originally played on either a rented portion of Sale Cricket Club or on fields owned by local farmers. In 1905, the club bought a field at the end of Heywood Road…” (Wikipedia)
Sale Sharks is an offshoot of amateur club Sale FC, still based at Heywood Road in Sale, while the Sharks share the A.J. Bell Stadium in Barton-upon-Irwell, Eccles with Salford Red Devils rugby league club.
The Sale rugby setup is similar to the one at Doncaster with our professional team being the Knights, our Sale FC equivalent is Doncaster phoenix. The major differences being Sharks; Premiership (Tier 1) v Knights; Championship (Tier 2), Sale FC; National One (Tier 3) v Doncaster Phoenix; Midlands Premier (Tier 5) and Doncaster’s teams all play at Castle Park but Sale Sharks play at the AJ Bell Stadium and Sale FC play at Heywood Road just over seven miles away.
The Knights welcome recently promoted National League 1 side Sale FC in their second pre-season match and their first home game of the season. The semi-professional side finished champions of the National League Division Two North by five points last season. Sale FC only lost two games from thirty played and had a point’s difference of 654 after only conceding 356 points.
Key Sale FC player Andy Hughes was given an England Counties call up recently, as well being named the Manchester club's Player's Player of the season and the National 2 player of the year.
Another to watch is ex-England U21’s and England 7’s Flanker Dave Seymour; Seymour has fourteen years of Premiership rugby experience behind him with Saracens and Sale Sharks and stopped playing for Sale Sharks to start up a coffee business. Coffee is something that he has a passion for but similarly he missed playing rugby. Playing as an amateur with Sale FC allows him to follow both of his passions plus set himself up for life after rugby. About 15 years ago, before playing in the Premiership Deymour played for Chinnor who have also been newly promoted to National One.
Clive previewed the tough test the Knights will face. "Any team coming here raises their game with the pitch, the atmosphere so it'll be a chance to put our new systems into place."
After the Knights’ impressive performance against Sale Sharks, Sale FC will be on the guard. The Sharks had eleven Internationals on the field at one time and their coaches and fans thought it’d be a walkover. They had changed their opinion =by the end of the game and were impressed by the Knights. (Thanks Marin C on our unofficial Forum). No doubt lessons learned about any perceived Knights’ weaknesses will have been passed to Sale FC but similarly Griff will have worked on them to eradicate them.
