English Championship Round 2
The Knights’ first away game in the Championship 2014/15 season is away against seventh-placed Jersey. Jersey is a greatly relished away fixture for those that can make it. Let’s back up last Saturday’s win with another one and ‘try’ to maintain our record of not conceding tries. I believe we’re the only team in the Championship that didn’t concede a try.
Last season Jersey finished eleventh in the Championship table after winning six and losing 17 of their 23 league games.
This season Jersey’s first league game resulted in an away draw against Moseley (seventh last season). This followed three home pre-season games:
Jersey’s key new signing was Michael Noone from Rotherham (ex-Knight) in a like-for-like replacement for departing Latu Maka’afi (to us).
Ayr – won 43 – 0
Bath – lost 10 – 34 Lost 10 - 34
Blackheath – won 47 - 28
It was the return game for Zimbabwe international Kingsley Lang for Jersey against Ayr. Head Coach Harvey Biljong was very cagey in his reaction to the win on youtube, conscious of not giving away anything. Reading between the lines it was perhaps just a run-out for Jersey and not a test, which might be sensible in the first pre-season game. Skipper-for-the-day Ryan Hodson scored a brace and Lang touched down in the second half. I couldn’t find any other scorers.
Summer signings Paula Kaho and Jason Thomas played against Bath. Flanker Nick Haining touched down after receiving the ball from Jack Burroughs, who made a scything run. Penberthy was accurate from the tee, adding the extras.
Jersey captain Alex Rae and second row Nick Campbell were both back in the Islanders' line-up for the final pre-season match against Blackheath, where Jersey Head Coach Harvey Biljong used to be Player/Coach.
In the Championship season 2014/15 against Moseley, Jersey had a 22- 22 draw at Billesley Common. According to the Jersey RFC Website, Moseley snatched the draw, “Moseley's Drew Cheshire claimed his second try of the match at the death and home kicker Ollie Thomas held his nerve to land the conversion which tied the scores.
The result felt like a defeat to the visitors who were in control for most of the match but were punished when they lost control of the match in the closing stages, suffering two yellow cards and conceding 19 points in the final quarter.”
Jersey scored three penalties before scoring a converted try following two close-range attacking line-outs. They scored another penalty early in the second half and one later. Thus Moseley won the try-count 2 – 1 but conceded too many penalties.
Hooker Martin Garcia-Veiga received the first sin-bin followed by back row skipper Ryan Hodson. Australian back row Nick Haining scored Jersey’s only try.
Elsewhere in England London Scottish defeated Rotherham 32 – 23 in London. Friday's match saw a 19 - 10 home win for Nottingham over Bedford while on Sunday Cornish Pirates hosted Leeds Carnegie and lost 18 – 29, Bristol also beat Worcester 23 - 18 at home.
This Saturday:
Worcester Warriors (8) v Moseley (6)
Bedford Blues (9) v Rotherham Titans (10)
Plymouth Albion (12) v Nottingham (5)
This Sunday:
Leeds Carnegie (1) v Bristol (3)
Cornish Pirates (11) v London Scottish (2)
Last weekend’s results leaves the Knights in fourth place behind Leeds Carnegie (top), London Scottish and Bristol (third) after just one game because they all scored a winning bonus point. We’ve got to savour the moment – we have the greatest point’s scored/conceded difference in the Championship and we were the only team that prevented the opposition from crossing the white line.
